From the U.S. Forest Service – Okanogan-Wen
atchee National Forest:
**Update on the Airplane Lake Fire burning in the Glacier Peak Wilderness about 22 miles northwest of Leavenworth, WA.**
A recon flight today estimated the size is now 900 acres, following two days of more active fire behavior. The fire is burning on the northeastern aspect of Mt. Saul in the White River drainage. We expect continued fire activity, smoke production, and fire growth for the next 3-5 days until weather conditions moderate. Hot temperatures and increased winds are forecast for Thursday and Friday, before cooler temps and a possibility of rain on Sunday and into next week.
Forest employees are currently conducting trail sweeps and developing a closure order for areas immediately around the fire. Impacted areas include the White River Trail, Boulder Creek Trail, Indian Creek Trail, White River Rd beyond Tall Timbers, White River Falls Campground, and Grasshopper Meadows Campground.
Chelan County has issued a Level 1 (Ready) evacuation notice for the White River Road (FS 6400) to the west of Tall Timbers. (https://www.facebook.com/CCSOEM/posts/pfbid02CTRFQrkYkmvaRdvuu57CJKhTgMLW7HWvv84nFhevqKXqWau3BntPbVJnFAvYd5psl)
We will continue to utilize a confinement suppression strategy utilizing natural features (like rock escarpments, wet drainage bottoms and old fire scars) to contain the fire. Fire personnel will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation and adjust tactics as needed.
