Chelan County has begun the process of creating a new community park in the small town of Plain.
County commissioners last week signed a $1.2 million purchase and sale agreement on the 18-acre parcel just off Chumstick Highway, currently owned by G&B Properties East. The land already serves as an entry point to local ski trails, and the county says creating the park would preserve that public access.
Plain is one of the few rural communities in Chelan County that so far lacks a community park. The county and the seller have about 90 days to close on an irrigation agreement and an easement before the purchase can be executed.
In a press release Monday, Chelan County administrators said the cost of the purchase will be split between lodging tax dollars and money from a sales tax credit from the state, referred to as 0.09 funds. Carrying out the park project would meet goals set by the county’s recently completed tourism impact study, which recommends more opportunities for tourism-related activities in areas not already heavily saturated by visitors, the county said.
