• The Little Giant Fire is located about 41- miles northwest of Leavenworth, WA. Yesterday, a local Forest Service Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed command of the fire, which is estimated at 245 acres. There are 31 personnel currently assigned, including 1 dozer (to do repair work on access road outside of Wilderness), and one 21-person fire crew.
The fire is burning in a remote part of the Chiwawa River drainage within the Glacier Peak Wilderness, west of the 19- Mile Campground in dead and down fuel remaining from the Maple fire in 2003. Over the weekend the fire increased in size pushed by warm temperatures and moderate winds, burning south along the steep slopes and upslope into the rocks. Due to steep rocky terrain and many down trees, personnel are using indirect tactics to combat this incident.
Firefighter and public safety are our highest priority. There are currently no immediate threats to structures or other resources at risk. Today, the crew will work along the Little Giant trail today, clearing access for more direct and safer access to the fire area. Forest Service equipment is repairing washouts above the gate and doing brushing along FS 6200 Road. The Chiwawa Road (FS 6200) remains closed to the public at the gate above Atkinson Flat Campground. The team will assess the need for additional trail and road closures.
Level 2 fire restrictions are in effect for public lands on the Forest. For further information on closure orders, visit the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest “Alerts” page. No evacuations are in effect for this fire.

• The Nason Ridge Fire remains at 5-acres, and is located north of Highway 2, six miles west of Merritt in very steep and rugged ground. The last two days the district was able to staff the fire with rappelers, and a Type 1 helicopter was available to support line construction. The crew is cutting a heli-spot to allow for more personnel and or gear to be brought in or out. Fire behavior was minimal today.
