Free hazardous waste disposal event Sept 29-30

The Chelan County household hazardous waste collection event is Sept. 29-30 at four locations. Gather up all those old household chemicals you’ve been storing and bring them for proper disposal. It is free to county residents. A reduced fee applies to businesses, which must pre-register.

On Sept. 29, the event will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Headquarters building on Melody Lane in Wenatchee and 10 a.m. to noon at the Entiat Fire Station. On Sept. 30, the event will be 9 a.m. to noon at the Chelan Fire Station in Chelan and 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Peshastin Elementary School. To get to the Peshastin site drive East from Leavenworth on US 2, turn left across the Peshastin bridge at the traffic light, drive about 1/4 mile and turn right on School Street.

The collection event gives households the chance to dispose of toxic and corrosive materials in a safe way. Materials include things like drain cleaners, paint thinner, old gas, brake fluid, anti-freeze, garden pesticide, insect spray, pool chemicals, bleach and ammonia, and oil-based paint. New this year, latex and water-based paint will not be accepted. Water-based paint can be thickened with kitty litter or other absorbent material, dried and then safely disposed of in your household garbage.
