Thanks to Lake Wenatchee Fire & Rescue Fire Fighter Association for donating time and materials to create a life jacket loaner station at the boat launch. Since it’s installation two weeks ago we’ve seen a lot of use every day.
The idea behind this program is to help assure that anyone going out on the water have access to life jacket, particularly children. Jackets are donated by businesses (currently IKEA and West Marine); customers in need may borrow them for the duration of their time on the water. According to the Coast Guard, 84% of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. Life jackets save lives; kids don’t float! Further, in Washington state, children are required by law to wear life jackets at all times when underway in a vessel under 19′ in length.
