An Update on the Lake Wenatchee Fire and Rescue Commissioner Selection Process

As many of you know, our Board of Commissioners has recently experienced some transitions. I came away from our Special Meeting realizing that the process and timeframe for selecting replacement commissioners can be confusing, and I want to ensure our community has total clarity on how we are moving forward.

When a Fire Commissioner resigns, the remaining board members are tasked with appointing a qualified replacement from the community within 90 days. Currently, we are working to fill two vacancies:

Commissioner Lamar’s Position: Commissioner Lamar resigned effective June 3rd due to family health issues.

My Position: I have submitted my resignation, effective at the regular July Board meeting, as my family will be relocating outside of the district once our house sells.

Rather than making an immediate appointment for Commissioner Lamar’s seat, the Board decided to open a two-week application window to invite interested community members to apply.

Here is exactly what you can expect over the next few weeks:

June 30th (Close of Business) – Application Deadline: All applications from community members must be submitted by this time. This closing date was previously posted incorrectly as June 26.

July 7th – Public Interviews: The Board will conduct interviews for candidates for both positions during an open public meeting. This meeting will also be recorded for transparency.

July 7th (Following Interviews) – Selection for Position 1: After the interviews, the Board will move into a brief executive session to evaluate the candidates. We will then return to the open public meeting to officially appoint an applicant to fill Commissioner Lamar’s position.

July 16th – Swearing-In & Next Steps: The person selected to fill Commissioner Lamar’s seat will be officially sworn in at our this regular Board Meeting. Because my resignation becomes effective at this same meeting, the Board will finalize and announce the timeline for appointing my replacement shortly thereafter.

It has been a privilege to serve this district, and I appreciate your engagement and support as the Board works to find the next leaders for Lake Wenatchee Fire & Rescue.

Sincerely,

Commissioner Mike Payne
