Sockeye 2013?

It might be worthwhile to spend a little time this weekend checking your Sockeye gear and if you are really feeling optimistic buy your self a license with a Columbia River salmon tag and catch card. The counts are headed in the right direction, no official word yet on a Lake Wenatchee Sockeye season yet… Stay tuned. PS: Red line is this years Sockeye count, so much closer to average then last years huge run.

I certainly hope you are correct. However, there are only 183,000 sockeye over Bonneville Dam and historically only 10-12% of those turn left at Wenatchee. If WDFW sticks to the 22,000 escapement goal, we won’t have a season this year. It is not like we get the best information (see below). Remember the lake is open year around for fishing and you are allowed to troll with any legal gear which includes a flasher and bare (barbless) hooks. It is possible to catch cutthroat with this rig. Cutthroat feed on salmon fry so you would be doing a service to the rest of us salmon fisherpeople. Just be sure to release any sockeye without completely removing them from the water. And don’t be a jerk like someone I spoke with a couple of years ago who claimed they were fishing for Kokanee.

According to the what I see, subtracting the Rock Island sockey count from the Rocky Reach count nets just shy of 3ok fish. That’s almost dead on with ’04, ’08 and ’09 each of which had 6-9 day seasons.

I’d say that’s pretty good odds.

I have made several calls to WDFW to find out the sockeye counts over the tumwater dam. They told me to go to the dart website and it should be there . Then I told them to check for themselves. So they did and found the numbers blank. One person even told me that there had not been any sockeye up the the river yet last week. But I had stopped at the Tumwater and saw many there and the staff there said they had some very good days. Last year Chelan PUD took over the counts but I’m not sure if they are doing it this year. Very frustrating.

Still have my fingers crossed. I love taking many kids out for this fishery. Love Lake Wenatchee sockeye.

Kudos to the WDFW for opening a season this year. I was skeptical but happy to be wrong about there not being an opening. I had some luck this year with two black hooks with two glow beads between the hooks and some pink yarn on top. This was suggested by someone at Hooked on Toys and worked well for me.
